Do you wonder why we seem to be having increased levels of unease in our society? Are you noticing that more of us seem to be suffering from a chronic health condition?
This is not a coincidence. We evolved into humans over millions of years and have been evolving as humans for the last 200 – 300,000 years! Evolution is a slow process and relies on the survival of the fittest to continue the genes suited to the environments we live in.
For most of human existence (98-99%) we have lived as hunter gatherers. About 10,000 years ago we started to do some farming and small villages may have sprung up – but we still lived largely outdoors eating natural food, sleeping 8 or 9 hours a night with a close group of friends and family (tribes). Around 200 years ago we had the Industrial Revolution which started to make some more significant changes to the way we lived and worked. More time indoors, more motorised transport, moving to industrialised foods and artificial light led to decreased sleep patterns.
Over the past 20 or 30 years the digital revolution has really got into full swing! The past 10 years since the smartphone was introduced have been transformative. We now spend on average 6-8 hours in front of a screen everyday!
These changes have happened much quicker than our biology can keep up with and mean we are now experiencing some side effects with our health. It is not that our bodies are broken just that our biology is not suited to the environment it is living in anymore!
Lifestyle First works with school communities to try and readdress this balance. We don’t get you to go back to living in a cave – although that would be fun – but we do provide strategies to realign your environment to suit the needs of your evolutionary biology and explain how the symptoms you may be experiencing are connected to the abnormal environment that is typical of modern day living.
