Lifestyle Medicine is a new branch of medicine that is both preventative and a treatment for the majority of the chronic health conditions all of us are at risk of. It is about person centred care and addressing the underlying cause of our bodies disfunction.
Poor metabolic health is at the root of so many conditions from skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis, type II diabetes, IBS as well as mental health issues such as anxiety, depression/ low mood, poor emotional regulation and symptoms presented in neurodivergent conditions such as ADHD and ASD.
Metabolic health is essentially how well the cells in our body make energy and this can be effected by high levels of inflammation and a poor gut microbiome.
Lifestyle Medicine uses the 6 pillars of sleep, physical activity, mental health, healthy relationships, healthy eating and minimising harmful substances to bring the environment we are living in back into alignment with our body’s physiological needs. When this happens our gut microbiome improves, levels of inflammation drop and our metabolic health improves.
With our physiological needs met our bodies know how to heel themselves! Many of our health problems are not broken bodies but natural physiological reactions to living our modern lifestyles!
